Cameron Stracher has represented many media clients in a variety of defamation, privacy, reporter’s privilege, copyright, employment, and commercial matters for more than twenty-five years. As a litigator, Mr. Stracher has successfully defended newspapers, broadcasters, websites, and publishers from libel, invasion of privacy, and related claims. His reported cases include Martin v. Hearst Corp., (D. Conn. 2013) (dismissing defamation claim arising from report of arrest posted on defendants’ Internet websites which plaintiff claimed became false once arrest was “expunged” by operation of statute); Sly Magazine, LLC v. Weider Publications, LLC, (2d Cir. 2009) (affirming summary judgment and finding no “likelihood of confusion” in trademark and unfair competition case brought by magazine); Finelli v. Tepfer, 2009 WL 1424688 (Conn. Super. 2009) (granting summary judgment for Cablevision in defamation case based on news report about plaintiff’s arrest for assault and animal cruelty); Duane Reade v. Clark, 784 N.Y.S.2d 920 (Sup. Ct. 2004) (granting anti-SLAPP motion and dismissing defamation claim against newspaper); Plasmanet v. Gruner & Jahr, 809 N.Y.S.2d 483 (Sup. Ct. 2004) (dismissing defamation claim against magazine publisher); Hybrid Films, Inc. v. Combest, 721 N.Y.S.2d 795 (2d Dep’t 2001) (granting documentary filmmaker’s motion to quash subpoena for outtakes); Raine v. CBS, 25 F. Supp.2d 434 (S.D.N.Y. 1998) (verdict for defendant on breach of contract claims by royalty holder); DeLoach v. Infinity Broadcasting, 164 F.3d 398 (7th Cir. 1999) (affirming dismissal of employment discrimination claim); Suarez Corp. v. CBS, 100 F.3d 957 (1996) (affirming dismissal of libel claim against television network).
Cam also provides regular transactional advice and representation to writers, producers, and on-air personalities, as well as pre-publication and risk counseling to clients such as Star, OK!, and National Enquirer magazines, MailOnline, Al Roker Entertainment, 3Ball Entertainment, and Hybrid Films, the producers of the hit television series Dog the Bounty Hunter.
Cam is a magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College (B.A. 1983), Harvard Law School (J.D. 1987), and the Iowa Writer’s Workshop (M.F.A. 1991). From 1994 to 1999 he was litigation counsel at CBS, and from 1999 to 2004 he was an associate with Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, and then a partner at the firm. He became a Senior Vice President and Special Counsel at Media Professional Insurance, before leaving to start his own practice and returning to LSKS as “Of Counsel.” He is admitted to practice in the courts of the District of Columbia, New York, and Connecticut, as well as the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Sixth, Seventh, and Ninth Circuits, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of Connecticut.
