6/24 – As the conversation about AI and its role in the music industry plays on, The Recording Industry Association of America, a group that includes major record labels such as Sony, Universal and Warner, has asked the courts to weigh in. In lawsuits brought by the RIAA in Boston and New York this week, RIAA claims that content sold by startups Suno AI and Udio AI infringes on the copyright of the labels’ artists, whose work is used by these companies to train their programs to generate music.  Suno AI has countered that its technology is “designed to generate completely new outputs,” while the RIAA has said that these unlicensed services are setting back the promise of genuinely innovative AI by exploiting musicians’ life work.
