Intercontinental defamation

8/1 – It isn’t just US President Trump who has taken to the courts to seek redress for alleged defamatory comments. French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have filed a 22-count defamation lawsuit in Delaware against far-right commentator Candace Owens, accusing her of leading a “relentless and unjustified smear campaign” by promoting a debunked conspiracy theory that Brigitte Macron is a transgender woman. The 219-page complaint alleges that Owens’ false claims, made across her podcast and media platforms, have caused significant personal and reputational harm to the Macrons and fueled global bullying. In response, Owens has doubled down publicly, mocking the lawsuit and suggesting Brigitte Macron might fake her own death to avoid discovery. Owens claims she’s prepared for a legal battle, though she has admitted lawsuits like this are costly and invasive.
