8/21 – Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 1181 into law, strengthening the state’s anti-SLAPP framework by explicitly extending protections to members of the press. The amendment clarifies that the Citizen Participation Act—which shields individuals from “strategic lawsuits against public participation” (SLAPPs)—also applies to journalists reporting, investigating, or offering commentary on matters of public concern.
Under the new law, reporters and media outlets facing defamation or similar lawsuits designed to silence coverage will now be able to invoke the Citizen Participation Act in defense. Governor Pritzker framed the amendment as a direct response to a rise in litigation targeting the press, including lawsuits linked to former President Donald Trump. “This law will strengthen our anti-SLAPP legislation in Illinois—ensuring press don’t have to fear retaliation for reporting the truth,” Pritzker stated.
Illinois joins 38 other states with anti-SLAPP statutes, and follows a national trend of legislatures amending these laws to provide clearer, stronger protections. SB1181 is effective immediately, reinforcing Illinois’ commitment to press freedom and public accountability.
