As the “world’s leading news publication,” with “a daily readership of 4.3 trillion,”The Onion‘s motto is: Tu sultus es. You are dumb. Now The Onion has turned its journalistic might to the Supreme Court, filing a “friend of the court” brief in support of a man who was jailed for creating a Facebook page that poked fun at his local police department, and who subsequently sued the city for violating his civil rights. In its brief,The Onion told the Court that its motto was central to its filing for two reasons: “First, it’s Latin. AndThe Onion knows that the federal judiciary is staffed entirely by total Latin dorks.” Second, “the phrase ‘you are dumb’ captures the very heart of parody: tricking readers into believing that they’re seeing a serious rendering of specific form … and then allowing them to laugh at their own gullibility.” Read The Onion’s brief here.
